Africké fialky svým vzhledem připomínají kytici v hrnci. Jemné květy jsou obklopeny tmavě zelenými listy, a pokud bychom je odřízli a svázali stuhou, dostaneme malou kytici, ideální pro dárek k narozeninám nebo na jiné oslavy. Africké fialky v domácnosti slouží jako krásná dekorace interiéru, jejich kultivace není obtížná pro zkušené pěstitele. Nejenže svými květy sněhobílými, růžovými, tmavomodrými a fialovými zaujmou každého návštěvníka, ale svými masitými, oválnými a plstnatými listy s malými chloupky zachycují minimální množství drobných částeček prachu v ovzduší a tím částečně přispívají ke zlepšení hygieny obytného prostoru. Africké fialky umí překvapit svou velikostí. Narostou do výšky 7-15 centimetrů, přičemž do šířky nabývají ještě větších rozměrů.
Jak hnojíme
Africké fialky pěstujeme ve vybraném hnojivu pro pokojové rostliny, ale vhodný je i substrát pro citrusy. Vzhledem k absorpci všech živin obsažených v substrátu, volíme opětovné, pravidelným hnojení (1x za 2 týdny), čímž podpoříme každoroční tvorbu květů. Nejlepší výsledky zpozorovali vědci při použití zeminy s rašelinovým základem, který neobsahuje vápník. Rozrůstáním potřebují africké fialky větší květináč, proto jejich zvykneme přesazovat individuálně dle potřeby.
Zálivka
Fialky se polévají hlavně do podmisky, ale je možné je opatrně zalévat i po okrajích květináče, kolem růžice tak, aby se její voda nedostala na listy, protože by začaly hnít. Poléváme vlažnou, odstátou vodou podle potřeby. Záleží na tom, jak je proschlý kořenový bal. Vyhovuje jim mírně vlhký substrát, ale nikdy ne přemokřený. Vlhkost vzduchu by se měla pohybovat alespoň kolem 50%. Pokud máte fialku nad radiátorem, nejvhodnější, jak zamezit osychání listů, je položit na radiátor mokrý ručník, nebo květináč postavit do podmisky s mokrým keramzitem, aby se zvýšila vzdušná vlhkost. Naopak zase příliš vlhký vzduch způsobuje hnilobu.
