Kuchyňské pracovní desky by měly být poctivě zpracované a vyrobené tak, aby vydržely co nejdéle. Jejich funkčnost, odolnost proti opotřebení i mechanickému poškození, ale také estetická stránka jsou záležitosti, které nás při jejich výběru zajímají nejvíce. U linky totiž každý den strávíte spoustu času, proto by měla být nejen krásná, ale také dokonale funkční. Zásadní požadavek praktických hospodyněk je potom jejich snadná údržba. Při výběru pracovní desky tedy musíte zohlednit hned několikero parametrů. 
V současné době si naštěstí můžete vybrat z celé řady diametrálně odlišných materiálů pracovních desek. Od pracovní desky z masivního dřeva, kamenné, polymerové (umělý kámen), skleněné až po MDF desky s laminátovým povrchem.
Jak se v nich ale vyznat a jaká kritéria při výběru vyzdvihnout?

MDF deska
Mezi nejpopulárnější povrchy patří právě pracovní deska MDF s laminátovým povrchem. Tento materiál dobře odolává v kuchyni běžně používaným chemikáliím (ocet, olej, přírodní kyseliny apod.) Na druhou stranu ale tato pracovní deska špatně snáší byť i krátkodobé položení rozpáleného hrnce na svůj povrch. Laminát by totiž nemusel vydržet takový nápor tepla. Také jí může ublížit nešetrné zacházení s nožem – ostrá čepel velice snadno poškrábe a tím poruší laminátový povrch, kam se následně může dostat vlhkost a posléze nabobtnat. Tato pracovní deska však patří mezi ty nejlevnější, tím pádem není problém ji při opotřebení či poškození častěji vyměnit.
Tyto pracovní desky se vyrábí v různých dekorech a tloušťkách (např. 28 mm, 38 mm i 50 mm).
Cena za běžný metr se pohybuje kolem 2 000 – 4 000 Kč za b/m (pozn. běžný metr).

Kámen
V kuchyních se také často používá přírodní kámen, který patří k nejluxusnějším a také nejlepším materiálům pro kuchyňské pracovní desky. Nejpoužívanějším materiálem na pracovní desku je ŽULA, která má velkou odolnost proti vsakování olejů či kyselých látek do struktury materiálu. Kamenné pracovní desky se také mohou lišit povrchem, a to leštěným nebo matovým. Leštěné povrchy jsou odolnější než různé patinové úpravy, avšak zanechávají se na nich snadno otisky. Matové jsou zase snadněji udržovatelné a žádné otisky na nich určitě nenajdete. Nevýhodou přírodního kamene je ale chlad, který může někomu vadit na dotek.
Kamenné pracovní desky si můžete nechat vyrobit v různých dekorech kamene, od klasických bílých až po mramorové a oblázkové v různých barvách. Díky technologii výroby a zaměření prostorů je lze umístit do jakéhokoliv rohu (variabilní úhly) a v různých šířkách a délkách.
Cena kamenných pracovních desek se liší podle druhu kamene a náročnosti opracování, běžně se prodávají kolem 20 – 30 000 Kč za b/m. Nejčastěji používaná žula se pohybuje od 9 000 do 15 000 Kč za b/m.

Umělý kámen – polymer
Stále častěji se na českém trhu objevuje umělý kámen, tzv. polymer. Jde o směs přírodních minerálů, pigmentů a akrylového polymeru. Jako přírodní materiál se užívá bauxit nebo hliníková hornina. Pryskyřice, užívaná jako pojivo, obohacuje kámen o schopnost tvarování teplem. Nižší tvrdost materiálu přináší výhodu při výrobě, a to snížené náklady na stroje. Avšak jelikož je to měkčí materiál, snadno se poškrábe. Dále není vhodné na tento povrch pokládat rozpálené hrnce a pánve.
Na trhu mezi polymerní kameny patří například Corian, Varicor, Coralit, Staron, Solid Stone a další.
Orientačně se cena pohybuje od 5 000 do 12 000 Kč za b/m.
Technistone
Je umělý kámen, který tvoří jakostní přírodní suroviny, zrcadlové a skleněné granuláty, malé množství barevných pigmentů a kvalitní polyesterové pryskyřice. Technistone je díky kvalitnějšímu pojivu na rozdíl od ostatních umělých kamenů odolnější a ve srovnání s přírodními kameny vykazuje stejné, v některých parametrech dokonce lepší vlastnosti. Nevýhodou, stejně jako u přírodního kamene, je chlad, který může někomu vadit.
Cena se pohybuje od 7 000 do 12 000 Kč za b/m.

Dřevo – masiv (tzv. spárovka)
Je vhodné pro zákazníky, kteří preferují přírodní materiály. Dřevěný materiál jako takový má schopnost příjemně místnost zateplit, to je i jeden z hlavních důvodů, proč se z něj stále vyrábí pracovní desky. Spárovku tvoří dřevěné špalíky, které jsou podélně slepené speciálním zdravotně nezávadným lepidlem. Aby dřevo splňovalo přísné požadavky pro dobré pracovní desky, musí mít kvalitní povrchovou úpravu zajišťující nenasákavost. Proto je nutné ji v pravidelných intervalech impregnovat speciálními oleji.
Tyto pracovní desky se mohou vyrábět v různých rozměrech: hloubka 50 – 1 225 mm, délka 150 – 4 000 mm. Materiálově se používají spíše tvrdší dřeva. Mezi nejpopulárnější patří různé typy dubů, buků a ořechů.
Cena se pohybuje od 3 000 do 5 000 Kč za b/m.

Sklo
Především je nutno dodat, že sklo je moderní materiál, který je prověřen časem a patří k nejvíce používaným materiálům v bydlení. Sklo je 100 % neporézní, hygienicky nezávadné a díky tomu na něm můžete podle libosti krájet jakoukoliv zeleninu, ovoce i maso. Avšak, i když je sklo tvrzené, může se při špatné manipulaci na hranách odštípnout. Naopak je ale odolné vůči škrábancům a vysokým teplotám.
Nerez plech
Nerezové plechy se používají spíše v profesionálních provozech, jako jsou restaurace, kde je potřeba udržovat důslednou hygienu. Samozřejmě je ale možné si tento povrch zvolit i do domácí kuchyně. Tento materiál je poměrně odolný na mechanické poškození, snese i hrubší zacházení, má vysokou odolnost vůči vodě a teplotě. Velkou výhodou je již zmíněné snadné udržování hygieny. Nevýhodou ale může být zvýšená potřeba leštění, protože na plechu se snadno dělají nevzhledné šmouhy.
Cena se pohybuje kolem 20 000 Kč za b/m.
Spoje pracovních desek
V 80 % případů se kuchyně na přání zákazníků realizují do „L“ nebo „U“ prostoru. To znamená, že se pracovní desky musí v rohu nějak napojit. Převážně se používají tzv. frézované spoje, které jsou při správném postupu takřka neviditelné. Pokud takovou zakázku objednáváte od živnostníka, chtějte vidět některé jeho podobné realizace staré alespoň 2roky. Takový spoj je totiž velmi náchylný na vnikání vlhkosti a při nesprávném postupu montáže může dokonale poškodit vzhled i funkčnost vaší kuchyňské linky.
