Tento brouk se objevil v Evropě v 90. letech dvacátého století, „dodavatel“ Severní Amerika. Jedná se o jednoho z nejnebezpečnějšího škůdce kukuřice. Dospělý brouk má podlouhlé tělo až 6,8 mm velké, s proměnnou barvou, která se liší od různých odstínů žluté až oranžové. Krovky samice jsou s černými pruhy, samci – většina z nich má krovky homogenní tmavé, bez charakteristických pruhů.
Bázlivci kukuřiční mají velmi malé vejce, oválné, asi 0,5 mm, obvykle žluté nebo bílo-žluté barvy. Larvy jsou podlouhlé, bílé nebo krémově bílé. Ve svém vývoji, larvy procházejí třemi věkovými skupinami, v první dosahují délky 1,2 mm, druhá – 8 mm, a třetí až 18 mm. V mírném pásmu se škůdce vyvíjí v jedné generaci ročně. Vajíčka jsou kladena samicemi do přezimující půdy v blízkosti rostlin kukuřice během léta do pozdního podzimu. Na jaře od poloviny května se od nakladení vajec objevují první larvy.
Larvy mají v procesu vývoje tři období. První dvě období – larvy se krmí na vnějších tkáních nejlepších kořenů, ale během třetího období již larvy napadají i vnitřek silných kořenů. Nacpané larvy se v červenci zakuklí do kořenového systému v půdě. Kuklení – toto stadium trvá po dobu 10 dnů, a pak z nich vystupují hejna střevlíků.
Larvy v prvních dvou třetinách ničí tkáně nejmenších vnějších kořenů kukuřice, kořeny hnědnou a hnijí. To vede k narušení procesů asimilace vody a živin v rostlině. Kořeny rostliny poškozené žloutnutím, zakrní a někdy uschnou. Kromě toho, poškození kořenů přispívá odkaz fibrillose rostlin, což má za následek nižší výnosy.
Boj proti bázlivci kukuřičnému je velmi těžký, hlavním účelem ochranných opatření je omezit jeho velikost a množství. Strategie v boji proti broukům je založena na aplikaci agronomických, chemických a integrovaných metod ochrany. Tyto zemědělské postupy jsou používány v pořadí střídání plodin, díky kterými můžete zcela přerušit životní cyklus bázlivce kukuřičného. Pokud vylíhlé larvy nenajdou kořeny hostitelské rostliny, umírají, protože se nemohou pohybovat dále do půdy než 50 cm. Chemické metody – nejefektivnější je zavedení zrnité výsadby půdních insekticidů.
