Krtek – oblíbenec každého dítěte, ale pro zahrádkáře jsou noční můrou. Vždyť koho baví běhat po zahradě s lopatkou v ruce a ničit jednu hromádku za druhou? Krtkovi nikdy nejde o zeleninu, květiny, nebo kořeny ovocných stromů. Jeho potrava se neskládá z části rostlin, ale živí se převážně žížalami, hmyzem, mláďaty hrabošů, žábami nebo myší … Jeho délka je 13 až 17 cm, hmotnost 70 až 120 g. Dožívá se 2 až 3 let. Denní příjem potravy dosahuje 50 až 100 g. Tj. skoro 100% své hmotnosti. Svou kořist neusmrtí, ale pouze omráčí poškozením nervového centra. Tím jeho kořist zůstane dlouho živá ale hlavně čerstvá.
Jak se bránit?
Prevence je nejlepším řešením. Přirozeným nepřítelem těchto škůdců jsou kočky, kuny, lasičky, draví ptáci. Jinou možností je, vysazovat stromky a rostliny – jejich kořeny v pozinkovaných koších. Přes ně se škůdci nedostanou.
Hluk
Krtek nenávidí kravál a určité zvuky. Tak proč mu je nedopřát. Existují speciální zařízení – odpuzovače. Vypadají jako krabičky s kolíkem, které se zabodnou do země a každou chvíli pípají, bzučí nebo vibrují.
Mechanická past
Mechanickou past natáhněte a vložte do krtkové díry tak, aby byl pojistný plíšek kolmo na chodbičku. Dokáže ho chytit jen tehdy, když je správně nastavena.
Zápach
Věděli jste, že na krtka můžete použít i tablety do WC? Dejte do každého krtince jednu tabletu, její zápach je totiž dostatečně silný na to, aby ho krtek ucítil. Zde je však sporné, zda chemické složení tablety neuškodí vaší zeleninové zahrádce. Nebo nacpěte barvené vlasy (po trvalé, nebo čerstvě obarvené) do děr. Bude z nich smrdět čpavek a to krtkovi příliš nevoní. Taktéž se dají použít některé rostliny, které mají repelentní účinek na škůdce. Například narcis, česnek, cibule, pryšec, bezinky nebo černý rybíz.
V čem jsou užiteční
Krtci přispívají ke zdraví půdy tím, že ji převracejí a promíchávají v ní tím pádem živiny. Svými chodbičkami zároveň provzdušňují půdu.
