Zimní slunce je klamné: může dojít k popáleninám na kmenech stromů. Obílení umožní chránit kůru z praskání, nevznikají nad bodem mrazu trhliny. Za teplých zimních dnech, kdy teplota vzduchu klesne pod nula stupňů, se dají provádět opravy živých plotů. V teplejších oblastech to není považováno za příznivé pro úrodu ovoce a bobulovitých keřů. Například: pustoryl, zlatice, šeřík, plaménky se mohou řezat pouze po odkvětu. Chcete-li chránit kmeny stromů proti hlodavcům, natřete kmeny speciálním lakem, dehtem nebo kyselinou karbolovou. Pro ochranu proti útokům hlodavců kmenů ovocných stromů lze použít krycí materiál nebo kovové pletivo.
